Characterization of behavioural disorders due to sudden separation in a home dog

Behavioural disorders in dogs affect their well-being and social interaction. They arise from causes such as poor socialization, trauma, or physical issues. These disorders manifest as aggression, stereotypies, fear, or destructive behaviours. Lack of stimulation, exercise, and routine worsens the problem, impacting their quality of life and health. This study characterized behavioural disorders in a household dog following a sudden separation. Over five weeks, five abnormal behaviours were recorded: displacement stereotypy (ED), hypervocalization (HV), scratching the glass (RC), licking the glass (LC), and jumping at the glass (SC), totalling 285 events. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between behaviours and showed ED was less frequent than HV and SC. Regarding duration, ED had the highest value and LC the lowest. However, no significant differences were found in average durations. These results show that separation can trigger a variety of behavioural responses. This highlights the need for preventive strategies to mitigate the impact of disrupted emotional bonds.
