Somatic cells count in milk produced in dual-purpose bovine herds in the coastal region of the state of Colima, Mexico

Abstract

A study was conducted with the aim of determining the quantity of somatic cells present in milk produced in dual-purpose herds located in the coastal region of the state of Colima, Mexico. Somatic cells count (SCC) was performed using the commercial kit PortaSCC®. The information was analyzed using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. The average SCC was 284,280 cells/mL. Milk produced in the municipality of Armería showed a higher SCC than that produced in the municipality of Manzanillo. Fifty-eight percent of the milk produced in the coastal region of the state showed a content of between 200,000 and 400,000 cells/mLwhile the milk produced in three herds (16.7%) located in the municipality of Armería presented values higher than 400,000 cells/mL. It is concluded that the milk produced in 94% of the herds studied meets the quality criteria
established by the corresponding Mexican. Standard and
is considered fit for human consumption.
